It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of gamings biggest icons. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata passed July 11th, 2015 from bile growth complications.
Iwata was advised by doctors not to travel overseas, to which he skipped E3. The Nintendo figure head would then undergo surgery to try and fix the problem.
Satoru Iwata got his start as a game developer joining HAL Labs in 1983. While there, Iwata worked on Ballon Fight, Earthbound and Kirby. He would later become president of HAL Labs and would assist on the development of Pokèmon Gold and Silver for Gameboy Color and the original Pokèmon Stadium. In 2000, Iwata accepted a position at Nintendo as head of the corporate planning division and in 2002 would take over for the previous president, Hiroshi Yamauchi.
During his tenure, Iwata would spearhead the development and creation of the Wii and DS family of Nintendo systems.
Iwata will be greatly missed by everyone in the game community.
“On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.” – Satoru Iwata
